Do you feel behind in your analytics journey? You are not alone! Many agencies and small businesses procrastinate on getting a firm handle on their analytics. It can feel like a monumental task.

In this 30-minute video, JLytics founder Jed Jones speaks with Kristina Witmer and Debra Horowitz, both agency owners themselves. Jed discusses the 3 first steps you should take to get started on your analytics journey.

Starting the analytics journey

Quick Summary

Jed suggests the metaphor of the analytics journey as a spiral that starts small and then fans out with each successive turn. Start with the basics, become familiar with your data, and then continue to “spiral out” over time to start tracking additional metrics that are meaningful to you.

The tips that Jed explores in the video include:

#1: Set up your foundation and identify your business goals: Get started by setting up your analytics ecosystem, and make sure everything is linked together properly. Specifically, this should include the setup of Events, which are conversion actions that you want engaged website visitors to take.

#2: Prioritize the metrics that matter most: Start with basic metrics such as engaged website visits, sessions duration, sales per week, etc. Be sure to get a sense of what your target numbers should be for each. Most metrics are calculated as counts, percentages, ratios, or monetary values.

#3: Monitor for engagement and conversions: Next, it’s time to sit back and watch the data flow in. As it does, pay attention to what you are seeing. It’s worthwhile to view your metrics daily so that you develop an intuitive sense of what they mean to your business.
